RAGUSA IBLA AND THE DONNAFUGATA CASTLE
Full Day from Siracusa port/hotel
Today our
first stop today is
to Ragusa.
Here we visit an important winery located in the heart of the Sicilian
Baroque on the south-eastern point of Sicily. Remnants of Africa are also
evident here from the architecture to the vegetation (olive groves, carob and
almond trees, vineyards) to the colorful red, ocher, and yellow surroundings.
All of the wines here originate from the exclusive selection of grapes,
harvested at two different times in order to obtain the best results from
differentiated maturations. They utilize soft pigeage (fermentation of grapes in
open tanks, like the traditional “grape stomping”), controlled temperature of
fermentation, and aging in barrique. Later we travel the narrow, country roads
from Ragusa to Santa Croce Camerina. Time to admire the
Donnafugata Castle, an imposing construction immersed in one of the most
evocative carob woods in the whole province. Used for movie scenes including an
appearance in "The Jar" in the film Kaos, directed by the Taviani brothers. This
afternoon a short stop in Ragusa. Time for a stroll through
the historical town of Ibla to admire the wide array of Baroque
architecture, including several stunning palaces and churches.
Later back to Siracusa port/hotel.
BAROQUE IN NOTO & SIRACUSA
Full Day from Siracusa port/hotel
Today our
first stop today is
to Noto.
Noto is supposed to be
the Sicilian baroque town. After it was nearly completely destroyed by an
earthquake, one of the most beautiful baroque towns was built up. Noto also
belongs to the Unesco heritage. When walking along the main street, Corso
Vittorio Emanuele, you get to the city centre automatically. Especially
interesting are the town hall and the cathedral, which can be found on the
“Piazza del Municipio”. Unfortunately, many buildings are not in a really good
condition, and for quite a while already restoration works are done to keep the
past’s valuable treasures. Since 2007 the cathedral is accessible for visitors
again. Anyhow, Noto is worth a visit in any case. Later we will drive to
Siracusa
founded
by colonists from Cornith in 735 B.C. and once the most important competitor to
Athens. On arrival stroll through the streets of Ortygia Island, the
heart of the city center. This afternoon visit through the Archaeological
Park highlights the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre and
the Paradise Quarry. Later back to
Siracusa port/hotel.
SIRACUSA & BOAT TOUR
Half Day from Siracusa port/hotel
Today
we will visit Siracusa,
the greatest city of Magna
Graecia.
Stroll
through the streets of Ortygia Island, the heart of the city center.
Here we will enjoy a collective boat excursion around the island of
Ortigia to admire the city and the Castle. Time at leisure. Later back to
the
port/hotel.
SIRACUSA: CIANE RIVER, LANDSCAPE & ORTIGIA ISLAND
Full Day from Siracusa port/hotel
A
few kilometres from Siracusa one can visit the naturalist itinerary of the
Ciane-Salinea reserve. This river environment is an ideal habitat for the
survival of many species of resident and migratory birds, including
stilt-plovers, waterhens, and various large waders. The source of the River
Ciane is highly evocative, a scenario of myths and legends, with its
circular pool of green-blue water (the name Ciane comes from the Greek Cyanos).
The source, surrounded by the green of papyrus plants similar to those in the
Nile, can be reached in a rowing-boat - an experience that has enchanted
countless travellers from the 17th century until the present day.
This afternoon return to Siracusa. On arrival
stroll
through the streets of Ortygia Island, the heart of the city center. Time
at leisure to explore the Aretusa Fountain and listen to the famous legend.
Later back to the port/hotel.
